For the longest time, I have been looking for a name for this blog considering this blog has been going on for almost three years. I have thought about many ideas and scratched many of them. I prayed about it multiple times, and completely forgot about it, until recently. Proof, that God does not forget about prayers, and that prayers don’t expire. Over the past year of my life, there has been a certain passage over my life that consistently keeps showing up. One of my professors says constantly that there are passages that consistently show up in his life, and this one is mine.
“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”- Luke 10:38-42.
There is a lot to depict from this passage, but this passage has constantly spoken to me of what it looks like to be a true disciple of Jesus. In this passage, it is essential to know the historical context, this is a profound moment because Martha and Mary were both women and in this time they were expected to be the homemakers. They were expected to be running around being busy, doing household tasks. But of course, Jesus switches things up, and we see Mary is found at the feet of Jesus learning from Him. In Jewish culture at the time, disciples would learn from their rabbis by sitting at their feet, so in this we see Mary representing what a true disciple is meant to be doing. We are meant to be found sitting with Jesus, having pure communion with Him. We are meant to be sitting with Him telling Him our hopes, our dreams, our struggles, our pains, our anger, and our sorrows, Jesus already knows them, but He wants to hear them from our hearts. He
I often think we see Martha in this and do not give her grace, but Martha is a victim. Martha is living by culturally appropriate standards, which have told her that she needs to be running around and hurrying, and sadly, I do not believe that has changed today in many of our lives. But Jesus has so much grace for Martha, I can picture Him saying gracefully and softly to her, “Martha, Martha”. Full of compassion and wanting her to join Mary and Jesus has grace and compassion for you as well friend. Jesus wants to have time with you. This story is so relevant to us today because think of how many times we have idolized running around, idolize doing work with Christ, instead of sitting with Him. It is very easy to do ministry for Christ, without doing it with Christ, and for a while I have been a victim of that. So, that is my prayer and hope for this blog that I would take you all through what it looks like to live abudantly at the feet of Jesus, how to live like a Mary. Welcome to life at His feet. I am so happy you are here with me.
One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple- Psalm 27:4
Have a blessed one,
Barrett
